Playradioplay "Texas"
Posted Mar 19 08 by: Kristin

Age ain’t nothin’ but a number.  That proves especially true for 18-year-old indie musician and Playradioplay frontman/mastermind Dan Hunter . For those of you who aren’t familiar with Playradioplay, think of them as a cross between The Postal Service and The Killers. His latest release, titled “Texas” after his home state, shows his true versatility and talent. This teenager dares to go where happy-go-lucky bands like Fall Out Boy don’t venture out to. Hunter’s songs tackle difficult issues like drug abuse and difficulties with relationships. But it’s not all doom and gloom. The catchy melodies are enough to make anyone want to get up and dance. I’m not going to beat around the bush and use all of this artistic, flowing language to describe “Texas”… I’ll simply sum it up in one word…

Awesome.

This is one of my favorite albums released in the last few years. I have listened to “Texas” nonstop since I received it a few weeks ago (I’ve become such a fangirl that my last.fm account shows me listening to PlayRadioPlay over 200 times). Go out and buy this CD as soon as physically possible.

Here’s my breakdown on a few of my favorite songs on the album:

Loco Commotion- One of the handful of songs that Playradioplay has released previously, and I have to admit, although Hunter chose to cut about three minutes off the original track, I love this new version. It’s a smooth track that mixes synthesizers with heavy guitar riffs. It’s a great way to kick off the CD, and it leaves you wanting to hear more.

Madi Don’t Leave- Another one of the previously released tracks, and PRP’s latest single. It’s the ideal “going away to college” song, where Hunter begs his girlfriend not to go away to school. It’s cute, catchy, and one of those songs that you just can’t get out of your head…in a good way.

Without Gravity- This is probably my favorite track on the album. It covers two of the best topics to hit upon in a love song… Pinback and drugs. All sarcasm aside, I love the way this song is assembled. It starts almost as a ballad, and as the chorus begins, you’ll find yourself dancing and singing along.

I’m Afraid There’s A Hole In My Brain- My most played song from the album, and after seeing PRP the other night, my favorite song to hear live. It’s simple and pure. With another amazingly catchy line (I’m getting/getting/getting hold of myself) and seamless transitions from synthesizers keys to rockin’ guitar licks and drums, it’s hard not to like this song.

If you don’t like my song selection, there’s a little bit of something for everyone on “Texas.” Are you a football fan? Listen to “My Attendance is Bad But My Intentions Are Good” where Hunter gives a shoutout to his beloved Dallas Cowboys. Have you ever wanted to sail the world as a treasure hunter? Give “I Am A Pirate You Are A Princess” a listen.

Either way, this is not an album that you’ll regret purchasing. Be sure to catch Playradioplay on tour now with Spill Canvas and Yellowcard. If you’re not able to make it out to this tour, rumor has it that Dan and the boys will be hitting the road again later this year.
