The Annuals - Interview

PBP – Can you tell us a little about your band?

Adam – OK well, pretty much everything that involves me involves the band so there’s not much to say about me except my name’s Adam, I’m 21 and from north Carolina. And our band has been around, the annuals, as that specific band has been around for 3 and a half years now. But we’ve all been playing in bands together since we were like 12 or 13 since ’99 or something. We’ve been touring the past year and a half or two now and we’ve just recently started being able to do this sorta thing so we’re really happy about it. We’ve been playing around in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia since like 2003.

PBP – You guys are from north Carolina, I went to school down at ECU…

Adam- North Carolina, wooooo!

PBP – Have you guys played at Cat’s Cradle?

Adam – Yeah we played there last night actually. Right after getting off of a plane, it was really tiring. We’ve played the Cradle I don’t know how many times.

PBP – Well let’s get the typical music questions out of the way first, who are your musical influences?

Adam – Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Paul Simon, Hey Mercedes, Coheed and Cambria, Ben Folds. How long you want this list to be haha? Bjork, Radiohead, bright eyes, hank Williams sr., bob wills and his texas playboys, yeah that’s a good point to stop.

PBP – You guys just toured overseas not too long ago, what was the coolest thing about Europe?

Adam – The coolest thing about Europe was Denmark, absolutely. Denmark was a really really beautiful place and the people there, since not too many bands come around to Denmark, they’re all so enthusiastic about anyone who comes through. They seem like no matter who you are or how big you are anywhere else, they still know the words. That was really cool but Europe is still awesome. I’ve never been before. I much prefer America, the west coast is one of the most beautiful places in the world. Europe was cool for sure but Denmark was definitely I think the best country in the Union.

PBP – You guys released “be he me” in 2006 and you then released an album in the UK in January, when can we expect new material?

Adam – Well it’s almost done, it’s supposed to be turned in for pressing sometime in April. I’m going to guess June or July, summer hopefully.

PBP – Do you have any crazy stories from the tour so far?

Adam – God, yeah well a couple. This specific tour? Well nothing crazy just shitty. Our flights just got really fucked up and we had to end up staying in an airport for 20 odd hours in Madrid, Spain. So it just really sucked, but nothing crazy, kooky, cool, or anything. Most bands all they do is hang out in hotels, drink, and play music. Most of the stories bands tell you are lies just so ya know.

PBP – What’s the weirdest or creepiest thing a fan has done for you?

Adam –People get your phone number somehow sometimes. Craziest thing I guess? We had someone try and get us to stop leaving by jumping in front of our van. It was actually really dangerous, luckily we didn’t hit them. That’s the craziest thing a fan’s ever done to us, except for the random screaming of obscene things to make us laugh, but we’re not that big yet.

PBP – What’s your favorite song to perform live?

Adam – Probably this song called “river run” which is on an EP we released in America. It kinda hard, you can’t really find it in too many places. It’s just a really fun country-esque song and I’m a huge traditional country and folk fan. So that one gets me going, it’s nice and fast and powerful.

PBP – You and a couple of the other guys in the band have been friends since you were kids. If you were playing a game of Survivor who would get kicked off the island first?

Adam – Oh God! Let’s see, I can’t say that! We’re all best friends; I wouldn’t kick any of them off. But, I guess I’d be the first one to be kicked off the island.

PBP –Halloween is a few days away, do you guys have anything special planned?

Adam- we’re playing a show in New York. We gotta get some costumes together. We haven’t decided on the theme yet, still thinking about it. But we’re definitely going to try and go all out if we have the money to.

PBP – What’s your favorite scary movie?

Adam- hmmm, well the thing is scary movies don’t scare me that much, but there’s only one movie, its kinda cheesy, that made me scream out loud like a girl in a theatre. The one with the girl that comes out of the well? Um….

PBP – The ring?

Adam – The ring yeah. Ya know when she did the thing, have you seen it? When she comes out of the TV screen. That one little jump, I screamed like a 6 year old girl. It was really embarrassing.

PBP – If you could put on a tour of any 4 artists living or dead who would you pick?

Adam – I would wanna go on tour with Johnny Cash…

PBP – Johnny and June? Or just Johnny?

Adam – Johnny AND June of course, I kinda lump them together. But Johnny Cash… a tour with Radiohead would be amazing. Um, Mr. Bungle. You ever heard of Mike Patton? He was the singer of Faith no More back in the day. But he’s made so much better music since then. It was one of his bands called Mr. Bungle. It’s some of the most amazing music I’ve ever heard. I should have said that was one of my influences, cuz the record “California” is actually my very favorite record of all time. A little known fact, “Californication”, the record by the Red Hot Chili Peppers was stolen from that band. They were going to call their record “californication.” But they opened for them for a show,  Mike Patton told them about it, and they fuckin’ stole it 3 years later.

PBP – what do you guys do during down time between cities?

Adam – um, I mean not really much. I personally, I read a lot. We like to play hacky sack, get drunk. Really standard shit… what anyone would do when they’re home ya know.

PBP – What came first the roadie or the groupie?

Adam – ha! Neither so far. Well I guess the groupie since we’ve never had a roadie yet. We haven’t really had the full on groupie yet just girls attracted to guys in bands.

PBP – Since you’re from North Carolina, I have to ask you, what’s your favorite thing on the menu at Bojangles?

Adam – I fuckin’ hate Bojangles! I despise Bojangles. I guess my favorite thing would be soda, how bout that? It’s like when you walk in there you get covered in grease immediately.

PBP- Not as bad as waffle house though.

Adam – I love waffle house. But then again I love waffles a lot more than I love chicken.

PBP – What is your favorite fast food joint then?

Adam – I mean we don’t make much money so I’m going to have to say McDonald’s. Their dollar menu is just uh…

PBP – killer!

Adam – It’s just very bad for you and sometimes leads to very sick nights. But if you don’t have much money and you’re trying to get full and feel disgusting McDonalds is the way to go. Actually my favorite is Cook Out, Cook Out in North Carolina. I dunno if that’s anywhere else either. But they have like 120 milkshake flavors and really great foot-long hot dogs and hushpuppies, I love hushpuppies.

PBP – What’s your favorite alcoholic drink?

Adam – whiskey, whiskey by far.

PBP – just straight whiskey?

Adam – Yeah, just straight whiskey. I’ve actually made a vow on this tour not to drink whiskey on stage. Because I recently found out that liquor is really bad to drink for your voice every night. Because it actually creates scabbing in your throat and as the scabbing gets ripped away as you keep singing it adds inconsistencies. So whiskey is my favorite all time, but when I’m on tour I guess its wine I guess it the best thing to drink.

PBP – What advice would you give to aspiring musicians?

Adam – Well I guess I would say, since it’s the only way I know how, its cheesy but don’t give up, keep trying as hard as you can. Because if you believe in what you’re doing and you put all of yourself into it someone’s going to take notice, if there’s talent there. Just keep doing it, playing every show that you can and keep putting out music as fast, and well if its good music, and put your heart into it and make it perfect in your eyes. And put out as much as you can and play as much as you can.

PBP – And lastly, how much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?

Adam – If it could? They’re pretty small creatures so I would say, they might be able to get a stump, like a stump or something like maybe if the tree was rotted and it was easy to get the wood out even though woodchucks can’t chuck. Wait! Chucking is like throwing isn’t it? Well I guess a woodchuck would throw maybe a branch, so a woodchuck would chuck maybe a tiny log. That’s about as much as a woodchuck would chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood.
